9%Ni alloy steel is one kind of special steels for LNG(liquefied natural gas) storage tank, as phosphorus is the key control element in steel, which has a great impact on the toughness of steel and directly affecting the performance of steel. In terms of phosphorus control, mills adopts the technology of double converter dephosphorization,[TJC STEEL] which can control the phosphorus content in steel to less than 0.003%, but it is difficult to organize production and has high production cost.At the ultra-low temperature of -196℃, the low-temperature toughness and yield strength of the steel are better than austenitic stainless steel, and the steel has good cold working property, weldability and crack [TJC STEEL]resistance, so it is an ideal material for the manufacture of LNG storage tank.
Low temperature shrinkage of nickel steel material, small volume change, low temperature toughness
But in terms of cost, 9% nickel steel is much more expensive than 304 stainless.
Currently, there are two major international [TJC STEEL]standards for onshore design, installation, Production, storage and transportation of LNG -- NFPA59A -- Standard for the Production.Storage, and Handling of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and the European Union standards EN1473 - Installation and equipment forliquefied Natural Gas - the Design of onshore installations.
In China, there is GB/T 20368-2012 LNG production, storage and shipment, which is modified by using the redrafting method and adopted the [TJC STEEL]American standard NFPA 59A: 2009. The content is basically the same as GB/T 20368 and NFPA 59A.
NFPA59A of the United States standard and EN1473 of the European Union standard have roughly the same main objects and research contents. The biggest difference lies in the different ways and methods of determining safety objectives and measures.[TJC STEEL]
